Michaelann Tartis

With a background in Chemical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering, Professor Tartis and her lab group pursue two main areas of research.  The first area is targeted drug delivery using lipid-based carriers and ultrasound, with the most common drug candidates for delivery being anticancer compounds.  The second area focuses on biosensor development utilizing whole-cell encapsulation in silica.  Currently, the detection of an analyte is indicated by the production of an enzyme, which cleaves a substrate resulting in fluorescence.  Dr. Tartis was awarded tenure in the Chemical Engineering Department at NMT in 2012 and remains dual-appointed in the Materials Engineering Department and Adjunct in the Biology Department.
