Advisement and Forms
Graduate students are advised to consult the BME Graduate Student Handbook, the UNM Course Catalog, the Office of Graduate Studies website, or speak to the BME Academic Advisor or Program Director. Commonly requested forms are listed below. Unless otherwise noted, all of the forms are available on the Office of Graduate Studies website.
Forms for Students in the Plan I (Thesis) MS Program
- A “Program of Studies” form must be filled out and submitted to the BME Program Advisor by the deadlines below:
- Due June 15th for Fall graduation
- Due September 15th for Spring graduation
- Due February 15th for Summer graduation
- Appointment of Master’s Thesis Committee:
- The Master’s Thesis Committee should be formed prior to the Thesis Exam has been taken and when the student begins taking 599 credits (Thesis credits).
- Master’s Thesis committees must consist of a minimum of four members, two of whom must be tenured or tenure-track professors affiliated with the BME graduate program. The remaining faculty members must adhere to the specifications in the GS Guidelines for Appointment of Master’s Thesis Committee.
- Two weeks prior to the Master’s Thesis Exam:
- An “Announcement of Exam” form must be submitted to the Office of Graduate Studies.
- At the conclusion of the Master’s Thesis Exam:
- A “Report of Examination” form must be filled out by the faculty.
- One copy of the “Report on Thesis or Dissertation” must be filled out by each committee member.
- One copy of the MS Degree Outcomes Assessment Rubric must be filled out by the Committee Chair. This is a School of Engineering form being used to evaluate the success of our graduate program.
- The semester before the student’s final semester, he or she must contact the BME Academic Advisor to ensure that their name is on the list of graduates for the semester.
Forms for Students in the Plan II (Project) MS Program
- A “Program of Studies” form must be filled out and submitted to the BME Program Advisor by the deadlines below:

- Appointment of Master’s Exam Committee:
- The Master’s Exam Committee should be formed prior to the Master’s Exam has been taken.

Forms for Students in the Plan III (Course-work) MS Program
- A “Program of Studies” form must be filled out and submitted to the BME Program Advisor by the deadlines below:
- Due June 15th for Fall graduation
- Due September 15th for Spring graduation
- Due February 15th for Summer graduation
- The semester before the student’s final semester, he or she must contact the BME Academic Advisor to ensure that their name is on the list of graduates for the semester.
Forms for Students in the PhD Program
- Two weeks prior to the comprehensive exam, an “Announcement of Exam” form must be filled out and submitted to the Office of Graduate Studies.
- This form should be submitted as soon at the student passes their Comprehensive Exam.
- This form summarizes the program of studies for the degree, including all courses (core, elective, and other) that you will apply toward your degree, including those you intend to enroll in the future.
- Due June 15th for Fall graduation
- Due November 15th for Spring graduation
- Due April 15th for Summer graduation
- The semester before the student’s final semester, he or she must contact the BME Academic Advisor to ensure that their name is on the list of graduates for the semester.
- Two weeks prior to the Dissertation defense, an “Announcement of Exam” form must be submitted to the Office of Graduate Studies.
- At the conclusion of the Dissertation Defense:
- A “Report of Examination” form must be filled out by the faculty.
- One copy of the “Report on Thesis or Dissertation” must be filled out by each committee member.
- One copy of the PhD Degree Outcomes Assessment Rubric must be filled out by the Committee Chair. This is a School of Engineering form being used to evaluate the success of our graduate program, and is available from the BME Program Coordinator.
- The final manuscript must be submitted to Graduate Studies.
Appointment of Dissertation Committee:
- The Dissertation Committee should be formed prior to the Comprehensive Exam has been taken and when the student begins taking 699 credits (Dissertation credits).
- PhD committees must consist of a minimum of four members, two of whom must be tenured or tenure-track professors affiliated with the BME graduate program. The remaining faculty members must adhere to the specifications in the GS Guidelines for Appointment of Dissertation Committee.
PhD Qualifying Examination Guidelines
Students should take the PhD Qualifying Examination immediately upon completion of the 3 BME core courses. This is generally by the 3rd semester in the program, with few exceptions. For specifics on the examination, please click the link below.

PhD Comprehensive Examination Guidelines
By their 6th semester in the program, students are expected to complete the Comprehensive Examination (Candidacy). This examination should focus on their primary research topic for completion of the PhD. For specifics on the examination, please click the link below.

Student Organizations and SOE Support
Many students and faculty within BME are affiliated with organizations such as the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES), Hispanic Engineering and Science Organization (HESO), National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), Engineers Without Borders (EWB), Society of Women Engineers (SWE), and Women in Science and Engineering (WISE).
